I feel so unsatisfied.

This is the 2nd night in the row I'm making a solid run in a decent sized tournament field. It's really sick how well it seems I'm running with the little I'm playing.

I just got 21/351 players in a $5.50 regular MTT. Last night I took 15/244 in a $2.25 deepstack turbo MTT. Then I checked last months excel sheet and I see 24/691 , 19/368 , 28/377. Then of course I took 2nd in a 90 man as well good for $50 profit.

With the exception of the 90 man all these close but no cigar runs are difficult to swallow. I really thought that coming up short in the last 4 runs tonight's $5.50 would have been better. The Dray Days Twitter page has all the updates as I played it through so I won't rehash hands but it's like I always say: if you're going to run good in a tournament, do it at the end.

I will always carry reservations when I run great early or midway through tourneys. Historically any time I've won or final tabled something big it's been tight play followed by a good run down the stretch. Maybe I shouldn't think negatively but it's based on history what can I say?

Besides fun poker tournaments online I've had a great weekend so far. I got to spend quite a bit of good quality time with Kristina as she's now in her 9th month of pregnancy officially. With my schedule it's kind of lame that even when I'm off I end up sleeping a large portion of her Wednesday's off. We're managing though and I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that some kind of schedule change is coming. I have a resume submitted for Billing at work which is M-F but it's been 2 weeks and I haven't even heard about an interview. :(

My old boss at KTSW sent me an email about a job opening at Clear Channel this week. It's an audio design engineer position producing commercials and promotions for the cluster of Austin stations they own. I went to Mix today and burned off everything that I produced when I was unemployed and able to pick up hours working in that department.

Came back home and earlier tonight made my first production demo with short clips of several different projects to try and show my "range". I probably listened to it 30 times after finishing it. Did my cover letter and resume and sent them in with the mp3, so now all I can do is hope. A steady full time radio gig and in production would be an AMAZING opportunity to learn and grow.

Hey man nice shot

Finally a shot taken has been rewarded! Just took 2nd in a $13 90 man good for $175 profit.

Roll's now up to 625. ^.^ (I learned that symbol from my work btw)

For those who don't have me on Facebook, I start my new 9pm-6am shift this Sunday night. :/ Tonight (Saturday) will likely be my last on-air shift for a while seeing as this new job has screwed me by scheduling me in the middle of my normal Saturday gig.

I don't particularly like all this change in my life, but perhaps looking back it will all have been good for me. God knows what he's doing up there. I don't have a clue, but He sure does. In the end everything will be OK.

Thank you Sir for the late night victory!

A clinic on endgame shoving strategy

This is going to be really long but it's only because of how amazingly long I was able to keep shoving over and over in the final two tables of this thing. Number one thing to pick up on is with the antes plus high blinds there's so much money in the pot it's worth it to just shove and pick it up. Just look how many times I get called, beat, and am back up to where I started in less than 5 hands. All of these are in consecutive order, I didn't edit anything out:

ANOTHER 330 final table

Running hot running hot. Another 2nd just a minute ago here at the station. This comes after a 4th last night, and a 2nd last weekend. If I can attribute this to anything OTHER than getting cards and getting lucky, I'd say I've had a pretty fearlses attitude when it comes down to the final two or three tables. I don't feel like I'm doing anything terribly creative, just employing good endgame shoving strategy using M calculations.

Account's now up to $375 ish. Oh and yeah I beat the "record" for bounties that I mentioned last night. 7 knockouts this game. :)

I start working officially for Blizzard tomorrow night. It'll be interesting to see how life will be adjusted in working a night shift. I've been 8-5 M-F for so long. I'm still expecting to get a call back from Ultra about the receiving job soon though. I really hope they don't disappoint.

Laugh over peoples ideas about late tournament play

So I just busted 7th out of that 90 man I mentioned last post. And the guy who called my shoved and spiked the river to knock me out asks "Why All In?" So I feel compelled to have an ego know-it-all moment.

Numbers don't mean anything late in tournaments. Stack size and fold equity is EVERYTHING. And for those who haven't figured it out yet: PUSHING ALL IN with a marginal hand IS ALWAYS BETTER than CALLING ALL IN.

For example I played at the Water Tank on Thursday and freaked everyone out when I started open shoving 13K with blinds at 500/1000. It was freaking people out because it THIRTEEN THOUSAND AND THAT'S SO MUCH.

NO IT'S NOT. It's 13 big blinds and taking 1500 in blinds represents more than a 10% increase in my stack size. Here's a great example:

Full Tilt Poker Game #11898871252: $3 + $0.30 KO Sit & Go (89178732), Table 10 - 1200/2400 Ante 300 - No Limit Hold'em - 11:54:21 ET - 2009/04/27

I have just barely over 10bbs if you're not paying attention to the antes. There's 5700 in the pot before cards are even dealt out. That's 20% of my stack! It's VERY worth it to pick up the blinds and antes.

Some people tend to think that the later the tournament and the bigger the blinds, the more "real poker" is being played. BULLSHIT. If you have 20bbs or less I'm sorry you're not playing real poker anymore. You're at the point where if you put any significant portion of your stack and fold you're making a big mistake.

In the above hand, why would I want to raise to 6000 to get called, cbet 8000 on a missed flop and fold to a raise leaving myself with 13000 and 5 bbs? Just fucking shove it and see all 5 cards. #1 there are people who will call you with hands you dominate like lower Aces, KT, QT, etc. #2 if you shove against people who barely have you covered you can make them fold better hands that are marginal such as AJ, or pocket pairs like 66, 77, or 88 because they're afraid you might have a big one. #3 If they call you with a pair like that, you're guaranteed to see all 5 cards and you can't get pushed off a flop you miss. When you're so low on chips you should be happy to race for 50% equity instead of being stuck lower pair vs higher pair for 20% or being dominated by a higher kicker like AT vs AK for 30%.

Finally I'll say this because I've spent too long on this anyway. When you're shoving consistently without anyone calling you, someone's going to want to take a stand because you have a maniac image. Meaning, they're going to start calling you with weaker and weaker hands. And if you just shove your big hands exactly like you would your others, they're going to pay you off and you'll build a stack so that you CAN play real poker. (I'd say 50bbs at least in tournament play)

I'm not really complaining because I want people to play bad and have totally skewed poker theories that translate into money for me. I've completely stopped the whole know-it-all strategy talk stuff when I'm at a table though. It's stupid and everyone thinks they're right even if they're completely wrong.

But I will reserve the right away from the table to talk strategy and learn from other players who actually care to think about the game, and also to make fun of the bizarre retarded things that people who don't care do and say at the table.

And seriously if you haven't read Harrington on Holdem v.2. You really should.

Here's my last hand from the tourney:

The hits keep on comin

I had me another nice run in an MTT, 3rd in a $2.25 180 man good for like $45. That boosts me up to like $275. It's funny how streaky poker is. I've actually been indecisive on what to do with this money boost, like what direction to go in. Sometimes I get bit by the tournament bug really bad and that's what I find myself looking for constantly. But I also know that the variance is so high, I don't REALLY want to bang away at them because the money's always few and far between.

Honestly lately I've been so indecisive lately that when I'm not feeling it I either don't play at all or just very little. I haven't started 4 tabling $5 sngs and I'm glad because the $2.25's I've been grinding the last 2 weeks haven't been going well at all. It seems like the last few sessions I've put in I cash in 1 out of the 4 I play and it's usually a 3rd or 2nd. Good thing I'm making up for it in other games!

I'm thinking about straight buying into the $33 WSOP satellite in two Sundays. It's a big guarantee for $2500 packages to the series, $1000 buyin for event #4 and $1500 travel expenses. My interest in tokens and satelliting in for less is really down because I'd probably spend the same amount trying to win the dang buyin. I dunno we'll see. I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing and take it as it comes.

Real world update I officially have a job with Blizzard Entertainment, the company that created World of Warcraft. I start training in a week. The pay is kind of low so I'm still keeping my eyes out for other opportunities. I actually have an interview with a real estate company tomorrow to be there admin assistant. The pay's a little closer to what I was making at SWA but they don't offer benefits. Whatever happens I'll be happy to be working again. Blizzard seems like a really cool company with a very young employee base. I already have two friends that work for them.

OK I'm getting distracted from the $3.30 90 man I'm in right now. Later!

Saturday's off to a good start

I've barely touched Full Tilt this week. Since last Saturday I played one 4-tabling round of SNGs. I've just been really busy working the temp call center job from 7-2:30. That schedule has me ready to crash anywhere from 10:30-Midnight. Tuesday night we also had our church small group meeting which went well. It was nice going to church this past Sunday and recognizing people from the group.

I probably could've stayed in and grinded a lot last night while Kristina closed at Old Navy but instead I invited Patrick over to spin some records. I really love that the speakers are working well thanks to me restripping the speaker wire when Eli came over a month ago. Long before I was obsessed with poker I was hooked on vinyl. Even though I've heard most of my records hundreds of times I still get the same joy from mixing and jamming out. Last Friday I had an hour and a half between work and meeting Kristina to get her hail damage appraised. I just came home and straight rocked it for the whole time and then headed out. The only greater satisfaction with DJ'ing is doing the same thing but in front of a crowd that gets it and loves it.

So anyways this morning Kristina's back at work and I just fired up a $5.50 18 man and took 2nd place, good for a $21 profit. My account balance this month started out at $133 and now it's up $187 so I'm definitely walking on sunshine so far today. I know $21 isn't anything to get giddy over in terms of itself, but in terms of percentage increase in my bankroll and that it's 3x the amount a $2.25 SNG win would get me it's a VERY nice boost.

Oh about the hail damage, State Farm's cut us a check for $3500 so we'll be shopping around for a used car in the coming weeks. Kristina came up with the brilliant idea of us keeping her car with the salvage title to it and using the money to get a 4 door that she'll need for the baby. So she'll get the four door and I'll start driving her Civic, which means we can kiss my piece of shit car goodbye!!!!!! And not only will I have a car with AC after being deprived for over 5 years, but all the stickers are updated so no more sweating close encounters with the police. And I imagine with the change in car status perhaps our insurance premiums will go down too.

No real advancements in the job search. As far as I know the temp job is over for now until they call me back, which could be on Monday if last time was any indicator. I do have a possible lead through one of Kristina's friends. Her fiancee knows a guy who's leaving next week and so as soon as he knows what I have to do to apply for the job they'll let me know. It's a good company with flexible schedules and good benefits and the job would be kind of an inventory clerk type deal. So I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that it will work out and we can get some kind of stability back in this sphere of life.

Don't forget to check the baby blog for updates about the pregnancy. We've got another appointment coming up this Wednesday afternoon! I'm officially excited for this baby now. :)

Wow even MORE pathetic

Played 3 point satellites for the big Sunday game. Two of them turbo 54 mans, and a regular 18 man. Both types the top 2 "cash" with 2nd getting points and first the seat.

I just got 3RD IN ALL THREE OF THEM.

This always happens to me. I'm on tilt and off to work.

So for the night I played 6 SNGs. 3 thirds and I took down the above game. Ducked into a $2.25 double stack tournament too, but busted with AK vs KQ all in preflop shortly into the 2nd hour.

Next post I think I'll do a pregnancy update. No news on the job front. I'm really loving filling in for production staff at the station. Honestly I could get used to this for a while longer. :)

February recap

First and foremost the BIGGEST news of the month is that Kristina and I are expecting! We've been "at it" for a while now and we didn't think this would happen anytime soon because she doesn't ovulate properly. But last Sunday night when she got back from out of town she took a pregnancy test and it was an instantaneous positive reading. We're both a little worried about the timing of this since I'm out of work. But we have faith that God knows what's going on and that we'll be taken care of in some way shape or form.

As for poker, the SNG experiment went well I think. I'm nowhere close to a reasonable sample size but I definitely put in more volume than I thought I was going to be able to. Here's the breakdown for the month:

120 $2.25 SNGs = $270 invested

11 firsts x $9 = $99
25 seconds x $5.40 = $135
19 thirds x $3.60 = $68.40

$302.40 returned - $32.40 profit

12% ROI (return on investment)
46% cashing rate

Early on I double checked with a new 2+2 friend and he said 45% was a good cash rate to shoot for so that's really the biggest stat to me. Now if I could just get a few more first places dammit. :)

By the way when you're playing 3 games and you cash in all of them it gets REALLY hectic. My computer almost can't handle it. Overall I lost around $16 for the month because of all the damn tournaments I played in. Just goes to show I can't ever stick to ALL of my self imposed rules.

Looking at REAL poker nutjob's January results

I just finished bubbling (just outside the money for the non poker people) in my $2.25 sit n go tonight. I'm going to play another but in between games I was looking at this thread: January results

I was really curious to see what good player's results look like for a month and what the fluctuations are. If you look at that thread these guys post graphs, how many games they played, their return on investment (ROI), etc. I'm not even going to come close to the sheer volume they put in because I'm not going to play 6-10 tables at a time. I've never been all that comfortable or confident even with my HUD display software.

While most of these guys are playing much higher stakes and therefore have impressive profits, I was happy to find this guy:

28% roi 2.25 156games=99 <--- the stakes I'm playing
11% roi 5.50 1222games =740
mtts=403
total profit=1232
meh grind the 5.50s didnt play nearly as much as i had expected too tryin to make at least 2kgames a month

I don't think I can get 156 games in without playing more than one table at a time. The last 2 months I've only gotten in 10-15 games. I think I can shoot for around 50-60 games in a month of not being employed. These things take like at least an hour to play if you're making the money. I figure if I can get in at least 2 or 3 games a day I can get a decent volume for me in.

It's promising to see numbers I could live with in $2.25's and $5.50s. I'm REALLY impressed at a $740 profit in $5.50s.

New strategy for Feb

I'll make this quick because I've been on the 'puter for an hour while me and Kristina are watching Tyra (don't laugh). I was online last night and was reading up on bankroll management. I popped over to the beginners questions on 2+2 and found links under the heading "What is bankroll management". The person posted a thread about cash games on Full Tilt and that the rake is so high, you shouldn't even play the $10 games if you want to make money. It's really impossible to beat.

However, he DID say that if you have 40 buyins for SNGs to play those. So as of today, I'm cutting out cash games completely online and playing nothing but $2.25 SNGs. As far as tournaments go they offer the best value for your dollar because 33% of the field is going to get paid. In big multitable tourneys, usually only 10% is getting paid and there's so much variance.

Right now I've got about 55 buyins with a balance of $130ish. My SNG records for the last couple of months haven't been too great, but I think that may have a lot do with a lack of concentration. I'm going to really try and focus when I'm playing this month, get a good # of games in, and we'll have to see what happens.

Winning anything feels good....gives you hope

I've been working my butt off at the station tonight. We had a meeting this week and I got some good notes from my PD about engaging the listener quickly and emotionally. So there's no poker in the studio tonight, I've been doing actual prep work! I think playing up here is a leak anyway since my attention isn't on the game.

I played two point tourneys before I left the house though, and I took down the 300 point one. These have been my cheap solution for the tournament bug while I'm practicing good bankroll management. The problem is that I was once up to like 18K and have since dropped back down. If I'd hadn't won this one I'd be down to 250 and I haven't been that low in a long time.

I want to build it back up again and use the points to satellite into a big tournament. At this point with where I'm at, it's the cheapest way for me to make a big score and get back to making some actual money. I haven't posted hand histories in a while so here's some significant ones:

It was tempting to try and play the 2500 point tourney I won the seat to, but I can always win another one. :) I want the points so I can keep playing!

A perfect example of why tournaments really suck

I wrote a blog a while back about why tournaments are torture. You play well, or get lucky, long enough to make it to a final table. Unfortunately by the time you get there, the only skill left in the game is knowing when to put your chips in.

So, in this final table example from tonight there's over 5K in the pot before the cards are even dealt. I have the biggest stack at the table and if I folded every hand I would only last 5 rounds. Based on the stack sizes no one should be just calling anything. Everyone should be either pushing all in or folding and that's it, according to anyone who's read Harrington on Holdem v2 which is one of the best books on tournament holdem.

So I spend over an hour and a half being patient, playing smart only to have this happen:

A perfect example of why tournaments suck. You spend all your time fighting to get to the end where skill is irrelevant and luck really has more to do with your results than anything you do.

But this is poker and that's what happens. All I can do is the usual: let out a sigh, roll my eyes and move on to the next torture test.

Still can't cash at the cardroom

There's a cardroom about 30 minutes from my apartment that holds 3 $500 freeroll tournaments a week where you only pay a $10 dealers fee and first place is like $250. It's great value because it's only two tables so I'll play them every once in a while. I've played in at least 5 of them and I still can't seem to cash. I always seem to manage 5th or 6th. That's what happened last night.

When I got to the final table blinds were 100/200 and I had 2400 chips which was slightly above average for what everyone else had. It still wasn't much compared to the blinds though.

I waited for almost a whole round before I open shoved KQ under the gun. Everyone folded. The next hand utg raises to 700, two players call in middle position, a short stack in late position goes all in for 300. I look down at two black aces and shove. It really was perfect timing considering I just shoved the hand before. The original raiser folded but both the MP players called. They had A8o and JTs, the short stack had KT. Board came K J x K x. Short stack won his small main pot and I got my stack up to 4800.

So then I'm on the button and wake up with AQ. The guy on my right who had a comparable chip stack to me raises to 600. I don't have a good feeling about this, but I can't fold AQ. I could reraise but I haven't played with him long and he hasn't really seemed out of line. Besides it would be bad to reraise with the intention of folding considering my stack size. So I call and so does the big blind. Flop comes Q x x with two hearts. Pretty much what I was looking for. BB checks, cutoff raiser bets 600. I raise to 2100, bb folds, cutoff shoves and I call. Ouch, he shows my QQ for top set.

That knocked me back down to 1200. I was able to shove and steal blinds a few times. I got called by K7o when I had QJs and I made a flush on the river to double. Then my best hopes for cashing were dashed when I pushed TT, got called by 99 and he spiked a 9 on me.

I had a lot of fun though, the guys there are a pretty friendly group. Most of them are pretty young and a few sounded like they were entrepreneurs. I talked to a named LJ about downloading music because he was carrying a laptop around with him while he played. But he mentioned something about buying a gift shop in Leander.

I also finally met Jason Dick from 101X. He's easily the funniest person in the mornings in Austin. I started emailing him a while back because he talks about how he likes poker on the air, and we're about the same age. One of the last times I was at this cardroom I told people I was a weekend DJ and someone said that he's been known to come to that room on occasion. Sure enough he showed up last night and I was happy to get the chance to meet him in person after emailing him a number of times over the last year.

After I busted I went downtown to see a friend from college spin at Plush. Had 3 one dollar lonestars between 10 to 11pm. Stayed until about 12:30 house stepping. The guy has great taste in music. The DJ's he opened for do a funk, soul, boogie night every Friday there and I'm definitely going to go back. It's free and a damn good time.

74 wins huge pot in WSOP heads up battle

Taken from PokerNews:

Play slowed down for a bit as Demidov picked his spots carefully to try and grab chips where he could in the face of Eastgate's lead. Finally, the dam burst and the two players collided in another massive confrontation. Demidov opened with a raise to two million from the button, and Eastgate called. Eastgate checked the Kd Td 7c flop, and Demidov checked behind. Eastgate fired out 2.5 million when the Jd hit the turn, and Demidov raised to eight million. Eastgate called, and then checked the river when the 3s came down. Demidov thought for a moment before betting out 12 million, and Eastgate made the call in the biggest pot yet in the heads-up match. Demidov showed Ac 9s for ace-high, but Eastgate tabled 74d for the diamond flush and dragged a pot worth over 44 million.

I sucessfully dodged all spoilers for two days and that made me happy. Before the final table was even decided I really felt this would be the year for the young internet pro, and I was hoping Hellmuths record would be broken and it was! There are just too many of these amazing young kids now for one to not clinch the big one you know?

Moreso I'm happy that a very capable competent player won this year and not a half decent amateur riding a once in a lifetime wave of luck like the last two champs Jerry Yang and Jamie Gold. It's not to detract from their skill, but only to pump up Peter Eastgate's abilities. His win may not bring a slew of new players to the game like a Dennis Phillips win would have, but to me that's ok. Poker's still going strong for now and ultimately I think the defeat of the UIGEA will help usher in a new online boom more than any WSOP champ at this point.

I think the 4 month delay wasn't as bad or as good as everyone thought it would be. I did like the change of venue and having it be in the Penn and Teller theatre, I think that should stay. But as a poker fan I'm still extremely unsatisfied that a 4 hour heads up match can be boiled down to 2 hands. I wish there was a way we could still get ratings and advertising dollars but at the same time show some more actual POKER and not just all-in hands and bustouts you know? People on 2+2 had mentioned doing it Poker After Dark style and chopping it up into multiple episodes and I don't see why it couldn't be done? If it's a matter of scheduling, then don't televise so many prelims, I dunno.

I just think there's so much potential to make it better than it is now. Someone just needs some balls to take a risk and keep experimenting with the format.

Apestyles gets an article in the Sunday Statesman

Online poker pro: 'A hard way to make an easy living'

John Van Fleet is without a doubt Austin's premiere online poker professional. He's ranked #1 in the state actually on Pocket Fives last time I checked. I was poking around the news sites trying to find the story about a northeast Austin game getting robbed this weekend when I found the above article. Cool stuff...

Most of the people I know who went to Westlake know who John is, even people who know nothing about online poker. This summer I met my extended family of cousins, aunts and uncles for dinner. A lot of my cousins that live here in Austin went to Westlake. My cousin Chad's girlfriend found out through the course of conversation that I was into poker and that I played online. She asked if I knew him and I said I knew of him, but not him personally.

I actually messaged him once on Pocket Fives to ask him about a story my old college roommate told me. He responded back saying it was true (I won't go into details, sorry too personal I think). That's all I got and I haven't contacted him since. Truth be told I've often thought about trying to befriend him to maybe learn a thing or two. I don't know if that will ever end up happening though.

The article is really good I must admit. The only incorrect information was calling sit-and-go's "sit-and-plays".
---

I'm purposely avoiding my regular poker sites today in the attempts to shield myself from finding out the results of the World Series. They were supposed to play down to the final two yesterday and I think today they'll finish the heads up battle. This year is the first time they've delayed the final table for 4 months to air everything up to it on ESPN, THEN air the results on delay. The idea was to generate more hype and garner bigger ratings.

But the great thing is you have a better chance of avoiding the results and keeping the element of surprise. Since I follow all the tourneys online as they're happening I pretty much always know who's winning every WPT that's aired because it happened 6-8 months prior. If I can successfully dodge spoilers until tomorrow night I'll actually have that element of surprise. Pretty exciting.
