Well so far I've done well in my attempt to play less online. I only put in about 4 hours on Tuesday night. I did lose $20 in a small home game tourney on Wednesday night, and then of course there was the Water Tank last night which I did ok in. Here's some hands from Full Tilt on Tuesday:

I'm not sure why I called the .90 but I was pretty sure on the river I was beat. At best I was splitting, but since it was such a cheap flop it's very possible he had an 8.

I've been seeing a LOT of people baby bumping big hands lately. It's like the the new hotness or something. That and limping big hands too.

Min raises too should normally set off alarm bells. I got check/min raised my top set 99 the other night in my home game. However it's nearly impossible to fold to the min raise especially with top pair in that spot. So I just check/called the river to minimize the damage. I don't really understand limping in the cash game with Kings but I made notes on that.

Some people are just blinded by the Ace kicker I guess. This is why I wasn't worried about her limping Kings earlier because I knew she'd give some of it back.

I was definitely scared of QJ or two pair here, but it just didn't make sense to me that someone would slowplay one of those hands on the flushing board. The river was harmless and didn't complete anything which is why I decided to make the call, not just because I refuse to laydown Aces because in a cash game it's really not THAT hard.

I said later in the chat on this one that I was very curious and wanted to call. But my gut was telling me that he had a Q and hit running trips. That and I didn't want to just give all my hard earned profit away on a mediocre hand like that.

Like I said this guy's aggressive so I had a good feeling he would bet that flop with just about anything so I decided to give him some rope to hang himself. I can't really put Treston on a good hand since he's just calling. Probably a weak straight or flush draw.

Didn't feel like getting too crazy with this hand out of position, hence no reraise preflop. Took Aus_Nuts 2nd or 3rd rebuy here he he he. Just goes to show you how important it is to know your opponent. Why he reraised with that turd of a hand in bad position I'm not sure. Bad players like sooted cards what can I say?

That's all for now. I don't expect to put in any time tonight unless it's after Kris falls asleep. Maybe some tourneys tomorrow during the day and while I'm at work tomorrow night. I'm going to take it easy on Sunday too even though Craig's having a tournament. I can tell this week I've been a little worn out on the game so no sense in playing a lot if I'm not feeling it. L8.

Better weekend

Saturday was a very good day for me in online poker. I had a good cash game session in the afternoon where I made about $25 on the .5/.10 pot limit 6 max table. I had lost about $7 on Friday night so it wasn't THAT much profit but hey I'll take it. There was one big hand I probably didn't really deserve to win where I had AK and the board had 3 of the same cards on it. I kept betting into this guy and he kept calling me down and I really didn't think he had a pair because he'd have raised. And if he did have a pair it was lower than the other cards on the board so I thought I could make him fold. Turns out he had AJ and called off all his chips with no pair, just Ace high. Free money! Thanks you stupid moron!

There was one hand I got a compliment on where I had 44 in ep and raised it up to .35 preflop and got a couple of callers. The board comes 4 2 6. I led at the pot and got one caller. Turn brought a 3, making four cards to a straight out there. The guy checked and I absolutely hated that card because I know at this level there are plenty of idiots who would draw to that gutshot with a 5 in their hand. So I checked behind, the other player has about $5 left. The river brings another 3 so I've boated now. He leads out for roughly $2, and I shove on him and he calls. Sure enough he hit that gutshot on the turn and paid for his slowplay. The guy on my left said I played the hand very well, and quite frankly I have to agree. I might have called a small bet on the river even if I hadn't boated, though.

I went to work at the radio station Saturday night and I wasn't going to play any online poker because I had lost a good chunk the previous Saturday night while I was working. But my fiance' asked me why I wouldn't play when I told her my plans and so I decided well if she doesn't think twice about it, then I guess I'll maybe play one or two. So I entered a $5 45 man and took that bitch down for a cool $85. That put me back up to about $425 or so.

So like I said in my early posts last week, I knew I was going to bounce back and I knew I would take down another one of these tourney's. I just need to continue to stick to the game plan and quit if I lose 10% of my roll in any 24 hour period. $10 cash game, $5 sngs and the occasional shot at a token after some really good results like I had.

I do have to admit I'd really LOVE to satellite into one of the big weekly tourneys soon. That 500K guarantee on Sunday's is so alluring to me, just cashing in that tourney would be a good payday. Final table??? Fuggidddabbouuutttittt. That's going to be a goal of mine for the year: satellite into the big Sunday guarantee. I won't say cashing because that's going to be hard and I doubt I'll be able to make into the tourney more than 2 or 3 times. But just to get in, either through a cheap supersatellite or using a $26 token or something would be an accomplisment to me. Everything after would be up to the poker gods.

One last thing. I'm really going to try and cut back my online time to 10 hours. It's going to be hard but what I'm going to attempt is to relegate my play moreso to the weekends and less during the week. I think Sharkscope stats showed my weekend results being better than during the week anyway. So probably at most I'll get in 2-3 hours during the week and then put in some longer sessions on Saturdays and Sundays.

Ok back to work. Peace out!

Chip and a chair and perfect poker

Well I didn't make the points last night but I sure did make a good run considering I only had 3000 chips going into the 2nd hour with blinds at 500/1000.

I was pretty card dead the whole first hour and I was at a VERY aggressive table. The hand that cut me down was when I shoved preflop for about 6k with blinds at 200/400 against two limpers and I had AT. The 2nd limper who was shorter than me called with AJ which in my opinion was a terrible call and I know plenty would agree with me. If you're going to put your tournament on that hand, why would you limp/call with it? You should be raising that hand not limping with it.

Needless to say I wasn't feeling great about my chances after that but I resisted all urges to just shove my chips in and go home. So I waited 10 minutes and got back in it by picking up 22 in the bb. A late player with a short stack baby bumped it and I shoved. He called, showing AJ and amazingly I won the race so that got me up to 9k (I had stolen a blind round previously).

The 2nd hour was completely opposite of the first. I had AK twice, QQ twice, AQ; just running hot. Before I knew it I was up to 36k, and pretty much got it all from a doofus with the chiplead who had cracked KK and AA on the same hand with 88. So it just goes to show you that you can be down but never out, and never give up hope.

HOWEVER the more tournaments I play the more I realize how you really do have to play perfect poker to win these things. And one key hand i didn't really think through, or maybe I was just riding the rush is what kept me from making the points:

The blinds were 2k/4k and I was still sitting on about 35k. A really tight female pushes all in for 17k on my big blind and I wake up with AQ. I wasn't really crazy about the hand but I thought there was a very good chance she was shoving with a weaker Ace in which case I'd be a big favorite. So I called and she turned over AK, the absoloute worst hand she could show me. The board bricked out and she took it down.

Obviously in retrospect I could've laid it down and probably would've made the points, but I forgot to play perfect poker. It also brings to mind some material I've been reading about what makes Hellmuth such a great tournament player, and that's knowing the value of chips saved is just as important as chips earned. That 13k I called could've been much more useful to me had I saved it and used it to push around other players on another hand. Instead I gave it away after working very hard for them and ended up having to push 67s for my tourney life. I got called by A9 (another iffy call IMO) but it held and I was knocked out.

I guess I have to do it next Friday instead if I want to make it to the TOC. But you know what? Even if I don't makei it that's ok because I really feel I'm playing these tournaments extremely well these days and that's all I can ask for. Everything else will fall into place when it's supposed to.

Laptop's back and I've stuck to my plan of $10 cash and $5 SNG's. I'm in one now about to make the final table with about 5th place in chips. Cash game tomorrow and I'm ready to tear some donks up. Expect a report maybe tomorrow night or Monday when I'm at work. Peace out!

Good week for free poker

Last night was my trainee's 3rd and final week of training so he needed to run the whole thing by himself. That meant I got to play both sessions and just help where I was needed. I had two good sessions.

Made the final table in the first game and busted around 7th place or 8th place. Then I actually won the 2nd session, but man did I have to work for it!

My first table was actually really tough. I had some smart agressive players on my left. I got bluffed several times and was shown just about everytime. That didn't bother me too much though because they weren't huge bluffs by any means, none of the pots that they won were worth crying over. I just kept chipping away wherever I could and worried about winning the big pots instead of trying to win a bazillion small ones. Naturally the bluffs caught up with Solomon and he didn't make it.

I made a really good laydown against Travis on the river. I had 77 and had raised it up in ep and Travis was in the bb I think. The flop came A Q x with two spades. He checked and I checked. It's hard not to put him on two overs in that spot and I know Travis like to check raise nowadays and slowplay. So the turn comes a blank and he checks again so I check again. Maybe I'll call a river bet and snap off a bluff but I'll have to decide then. The river is a 7 of spades. Travis checks again, I bet out 7000 leaving myself 25-27k left. Well then travis goes all in. So I thought about it, and I said out loud "I let you get there for free didn't I?" and he pretty much nodded his head and I could tell he had the goods. So I counted my chips out, decided that I still had enough to come back from and folded my set face up. Travis showed J9s for the flush.

We actually sparred multiple times. Another hand I had A3o in ep and had raised it up and got two callers including Travis. I flopped the wheel 2 4 5. Travis checked and i bet out 10k and he goes over the top of me with AJo. I call of course, and he rivers the 3 on me for a split.

I got him back with my big hand of the night. We were both sitting around 70k with the blinds at 3/6k. He raised my bb from the cutoff to 20k, and I looked down at 88 and immediately shoved. I felt good about it because he had been showing down some very marginal hands like Q8 and A8. I had 50k more to him and he had me covered just barely. He thought about it and finally called showing AQo. The flop came A Q 8!!! My set held and I took that pot down for 145k.

This is the 3rd time in the last couple of months I've made it to the final table with a big stack and I must say, it's SO much nicer than going in with 3 blinds. So far my results with a chip lead going in are 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Anyways, I'm playing Clicks again tonight to qualify for the TOC. Hopefully I'll have some good luck and play well and make a high finish to get in to that sumbitch. Oh and my laptop is back already from HP so I'll be back online again this weekend sometime I'm sure. Got a cash game coming up on Sunday, we'll see if I can get further in the black as I'm just about even for the year in live play so far.

Holla!

Confidence booster

Well now that my laptop is gone I'm restricted to live play, but I have to say I'm relieved to be forced into a break from online poker. It really is hard to go a day without playing online if the opportunity's there. My little brothers and sister are in town for the week too so I'm planning on spending the next couple of nights hanging out with them.

Last night I actually took my 16 year old brother out to RC Fowlers for some free bar league poker. He lasted for most of the first hour but finally dropped out. I ended up taking 2nd. It was another Fowlers tournament where I got to the final table as a bigstack which makes it so much easier to move up in points. I had about 180k when the starting blinds were 5/10k.

I figured it was going to be a good game when I made a wheel on the very first hand. 2 or 3 limpers so I did too on the button with 45h. The flop came A 3 x and everyone checked. The turn was a 2. Kevin, Mr. Jager as I call him, led out for 1000 and the lady on my right just called. Now I know she's a terrible player who plays way too many hands early and goes for long shot draws like gutshots, etc. So instead of smooth calling I decided to pot it up to 3500 total. Kevin folded and the lady called after thinking about it for a few seconds. River was a 3, she checked, and I value bet 3000 fairly quickly and she called then mucked her cards when I showed her the straight. She went out within the next 5 hands on top pair Q with a 9 kicker (and she complains about bad free poker players HA!). I'm just glad I was able to get a hand to get some of that dead money before it was all gone.

The two big hands that boosted my stack bigtime were AT and AQ.

When were down to about 4 tables I just moved to a new table that was shorthanded with only about 6 players including me. So I get AT in mp, utg limps and I have about 32k with the blinds at 2k/4k; limper has me covered by less than 5k. This is a spot where I love shoving against players that are limping in with large portions of their stack. Even though I don't really know this guy, I know how most free players operate and I'd say 95% of the time people that limp/all in in these games are NOT doing it with AA KK QQ or AK. Most of the time it's hands like low suited Aces and face cards like KJ or KQ maybe even small pairs. They want to see a cheap flop and then go from there but once you raise them half their remaining stack it's like "fuck it" and they shove because they don't want to lay it down. ANYWAYS. I shoved and the guy called instantly and table KQ. The board bricked out and I doubled up to over 60k.

Then I get moved again and I see that Rob has a big stack. He's a very loose agressive player who likes to play a lot of flops and try to suckout gutshot straight draws and things like that. I've seen him amass chips very fast when he's hitting his hands. So I pick up AQ, the blinds are 3k/6k now. There's a short stack in the bb, Rob is in the sb with about the same amount of chips as me. I raise to 20k, Rob calls and the bb goes all in for less than the raise. Well the flop came Q high and Rob checked it. I went all in and he called, showing JJ in the hole. He got no help on the turn and the river and then BAM! I'm up to 145k. I took one more player out before making the final table which got me up to the 180k.

Final table was pretty uneventful. I really didn't get any hands and my plan was just to play super tight and not give any of my chips away so I could move up in points. The only real hand I had was 55 on the button, 6 handed and I had 75k in chips with blinds at 30/60k. UTG limps, I shove, the donk on my left who pissed away his big stack by calling all ins with 59s and 89s preflop shoves for 98k. Both the bb and the limper call. So I know I'm screwed at this point. Flop comes K 8 7. UTG shoves for another 40 or 50k and the bb calls. BB has 22, UTG has K9, Donk has A7o. I hit my miracle 5 on the turn, and then a 7 hits the river to boat me up. So I quaded up to 300k.

And that's pretty much the only hand I really played except for the final one where I was in the bb for 100k with Q6o, the sb is all in for 50k. We're 3 handed and the button shoves. It's either this hand or next hand b/c the blinds just doubled again. Button has AA and takes us both out. :) I had 11 blue chips as well for 550 bonus points so all in all a very good night out.

I just hope I didn't use up my good fortune b/c I'm going to need it for Friday's Clicks game where I need a top finish to qualify for the TOC next month. Wish me luck!

More thoughts...

I know I will bounce back from this weekend. I know it. But the fact that I'm still thinking about the loss only further goes to show that even though it was within my bankroll to play $10 sit n go's, maybe I'm not ready to play them on a consistent basis.

My new plan of action will be to continue what I was doing before my big cash: .5/.10 cash game pot limit and $5 45 man SNG's. I have a proven record in the 45 man SNG's, so I'm going to continue playing the $5 ones and NOT the $11 ones. A win in one of those is $80 profit which will be very good in bouncing back.

As far as tokens go....

these have always been a good source for me to LOSE $ with the exception of my big cash. So for now I'm going to hold off on them and only go for them if I have a really good session(s) and then build them up again. Then I'll take down another $75 and this post will only serve as a reminder that it's easy to think you're better than you are.

I feel sick

Well, it was not a good weekend for poker. I think my Friday night was the catalyst. I went to Clicks to try and make decent points again to qualify for the Lone Star TOC, but fell just short of the final table. I played a pretty good tournament with the exception of the last hand, which I still don't think I played too bad. Basically this tricky/passive player limped in ep, but I didn't realize it so when it was folded to me in the sb with AT I thought it was a battle of the blinds. So with the blinds at 500/1000 I raised to 3k. BB folded and then I realized that the other player was in. He called the 2k. Flop comes 9 6 2. I've got 9k, there's 6 in the pot. Passive player has me covered but not by a whole lot. I shove, and he thinks about it for like 2 minutes and finally calls, turning over T9o having me COMPLETELY dominated (of course he as the dominated one going to the flop). The only mistake I feel I made in the hand was not raising enough preflop, but had I realized he was in the hand I'd have made it 4k and not 3k. I don't feel bad about the flop shove because it's so unlikely that board hit him, and I almost made him lay it down. Oh well I'll have to qualify this Friday instead.

Summary of this weekend's online activity:

Cash game - lost $28.10
SNG's - Failed to cash in 3 $11 games, one 9 man; 2 45 man. Also a $5 45 man as well.
Tokens - Lost 1 in a WSOP satellite, another trying to win a $75 token; I did earn another one yesterday and then used it to enter a double stack guarantee tourney which I didn't cash in either. Entered a $6.90 heads up shootout for another token and made it to the 2nd round but the lost that one.
MTT - Entered a $5.50. Place 177/492. No $$ :(

Overall I lost about $100 online over the weekend which makes me sick to my stomach. It's just bringing back bad memories of when I won that $5.50 MTT last year and subsequently lost all that money. My balance is now down to 335.83 when two weeks ago I won that Tier 3 it was at $487.

Did I go on tilt a little? Maybe a little. However, I did follow the Ferguson bankroll rules by not putting more than 5% at risk at any one time. However, Saturday and Sunday I did lose more than 10% each day and that's the part I forgot to pay attention to. Had I taken more care of what I was doing I'd have only lost $80 instead of $100.

Probably the worst hand I played was yesterday's cash game. I slowplayed a flopped set of JJ on a dangerous board against two players and the one that was drawing hit the river and broke me. I then subsequently lost $20 more in that game from cold decks. Same guy cracked my AA with T7o by flopping trips and turning a boat. He slowplayed me all the way down. I lost the other 10 with AQ tptk, someone else slowplayed KK to the river on me. :(

I think the game that's irking me the most is the MTT though. I swear if I get a big stack early in these things it just spells certain doom for me. I jumped from like 1500 to 5000 early on by hitting a set with 99 and taking out all these morons. But I was out shortly after the first break. :( I swear I had like 3 str8/flush draws and missed every time. And I played them all pretty cheaply/passively so as not to committ too many chips, but damn you'd think I'd hit at least one freakin flush draw!

Anyways, I just sent my laptop off to HP to get the monitor cable fixed so the opportunity to tilt off any more $ will be very limited for the next week and a half. Probably a very good thing. We'll see how I handle the withdrawals. LOL

I looked up the stats and I was 67% to win and the closest anyone else had of actually winning the pot and not tying, was 8% or something. I can't say I was surprised with the results, but thats poker.

I'm going to attempt to cut back on my time spent playing online. My new goal is to average only about 10 hours a week of online play. That with a few league games and Sunday home games sprinkled in should be enough to keep me sharp and freed up to do other stuff besides poker.
